The Tshaluna Trek is a rewarding four-day trek in Bhutan, suitable for trekkers seeking a moderately challenging experience. It is especially popular among those looking for a shorter alternative to the classic Druk Path Trek. The route offers stunning scenery as it crosses the mountain range separating the Paro and Thimphu valleys, rewarding hikers with sweeping panoramic views.
This trek is particularly known for its vibrant rhododendron forests and beautiful high-altitude lakes, many of which are rich in fish and surrounded by pristine alpine landscapes.
Best time to trek: March to May and mid-September to mid-December.
Day 1: Arrival in Paro & Sightseeing
Altitude: 2,280 m
- Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your guide.
- Transfer to hotel and settle in.
- Visit Ta Dzong (National Museum) and Rinpung Dzong overlooking Paro Valley.
- Evening visit to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse.
- Dinner and overnight in Paro.
Day 2: Paro Sightseeing & Tiger’s Nest Hike
Altitude: 2,280 m
- Drive to Satsam Chorten; hike 2 hours to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery).
- Afternoon visit to Drugyal Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang (659 A.D.).
- Evening free for strolling in Paro town.
- Dinner and overnight in Paro.
Day 3: Paro – Jele Dzong (Start of Tshaluna Trek)
Altitude: 3,480 m (camp)
- Drive to Damchena and start trek to Jele Dzong.
- Gradual ascent along scenic trails; panoramic views of Paro Valley and Jele La Pass (3,400 m).
- Walking distance: 8 km | Duration: 3 hrs | Ascent: 1,090 m
- Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 4: Jele Dzong – Jangchulakha
Altitude: 3,770 m (camp)
- Trek through rhododendron forests with views of Mt. Jomolhari and surrounding snow-capped peaks.
- Walking distance: 10 km | Duration: 3–4 hrs | Ascent: 310 m | Descent: 50 m
- Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 5: Jangchulakha – Jimilangtsho Lake
Altitude: 3,700 m (camp)
- Ridge trail with breathtaking Himalayan vistas; short descent to Jimilangtsho Lake.
- Walking distance: 11 km | Duration: 4 hrs | Ascent: 330 m | Descent: 230 m
- Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 6: Jimilangtsho – Tshaluna – Thimphu (End of Trek)
Altitude: 2,334 m
- Descend along a stream to Tshaluna; packed lunch en route.
- Trek ends; vehicle transfer to Thimphu.
- Walking distance: 9 km | Duration: 4 hrs downhill
- Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.
Day 7: Thimphu Sightseeing
Altitude: 2,334 m
- Visit National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma (51.5 m), Changangkha Monastery, Takin Preserve, Sangaygang Viewpoint, Dupthop Lhakhang.
- Lunch at Simply Bhutan Museum Restaurant; visit craft bazaar.
- Evening visit to Tashichho Dzong.
- Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.
Day 8: Thimphu – Punakha – Thimphu
Distance: 76 km | Drive: ~3 hrs | Altitude: 1,242 m
- Drive to Punakha Valley via Dochula Pass (3,140 m).
- Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility) and Punakha Dzong.
- Evening return to Thimphu.
- Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.
Day 9: Thimphu – Paro (Departure)
Distance: 54 km | Drive: ~1 hr
- Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure.
- End of Tshaluna Trek and Cultural Tour
