Punakha Dromche Festival stands out as the only festival featuring a procession that re-enacts the 17th-century war against Tibet. Dedicated to the two principal protective deities of the Drukpas—Yeshe Gompo (Mahakala) and Palden Lhamo—this event unfolds during the first month of the lunar year and culminates with the ‘Serda’, a magnificent procession that recreates a historic episode from the conflict. The festival is renowned for its Cham dances, where performers wear striking costumes made from yellow silk or rich brocade, often embellished with carved bone ornaments. In some performances, dancers also wear masks that depict animals, formidable deities, skulls, or even ordinary humans. These dances are grouped into three categories: instructive or didactic dances, those that purify and protect a space from demonic spirits, and dances that celebrate the triumph of Buddhism.
