The 5-day Dagala Trek in Bhutan begins near Thimphu and takes you through a stunning collection of high-altitude glacial lakes. The trek is generally easy, with mostly short hiking days, though some sections feature steep climbs. The route starts from Khoma (near Thimphu) and concludes at Chamgang, Thimphu. On clear winter and spring days, trekkers can enjoy views of Mt. Kanchenjunga in India. The trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,300 m, covers a total distance of 41 km, and is rated moderate in difficulty.

Best time to trek: March – May & mid-September – mid-December.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro & Sightseeing

Altitude: 2,280 m

  • Arrive at Paro International Airport and meet your guide.
  • Transfer to hotel and settle in.
  • Visit Ta Dzong (National Museum) and Rinpung Dzong overlooking Paro Valley.
  • Evening visit to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse.
  • Dinner and overnight in Paro.
Day 2: Paro Sightseeing – Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Altitude: 2,280 m

  • Short drive to Satsam Chorten; 2-hour hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest).
  • Afternoon visit to Drugyal Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang (659 A.D.).
  • Evening free to explore Paro town.
  • Dinner and overnight in Paro.
Day 3: Paro – Geynekha – Gur (Start of Dagala Trek)

Campsite Altitude: 3,290 m

  • Drive 1.5 hours to Geynekha, passing Tamchog Monastery (15th century).
  • Continue through Bama and Chizhi villages, then trek past Tsochekha village.
  • Cross a suspension bridge through oak forests to reach Gur camp.
  • Distance: 7 km | Duration: 4 hrs
  • Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 4: Gur – Labatamba

Campsite Altitude: 4,300 m

  • Cross a pass at 4,240 m with views of Dagala village.
  • Trek past herders’ camps to the Labatamba Valley, near Utso Lake and other nearby lakes.
  • Distance: 12 km | Duration: 5 hrs | Ascent: 1,040 m | Descent: 110 m
  • Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 5: Labatamba – Panka

Campsite Altitude: 4,000 m

  • Ascend along the western side of the lake (4,500 m), then descend steeply to a lake at 4,350 m.
  • Continue to the Panka Valley.
  • Distance: 8 km | Duration: 6–7 hrs | Ascent: 260 m | Descent: 520 m
  • Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 6: Panka – Talakha

Campsite Altitude: 3,080 m

  • Cross a pass at 4,000 m and ascend along a ridge to 4,270 m, with views of the Dagala range and Thimphu Valley.
  • Long descent through forest to Talakha village.
  • Distance: 8 km | Duration: 6–7 hrs | Ascent: 180 m | Descent: 1,100 m
  • Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day 7: Talakha – Chamgang – Thimphu (End of Trek)

Altitude: 2,640 m (Chamgang)

  • Descend steeply to Chamgang, where vehicle transfer awaits.
  • Drive to Thimphu; rest at hotel after lunch.
  • Evening visit to Tashichho Dzong, seat of the national government and central monastic body.
  • Distance: 6 km | Duration: 3 hrs | Descent: 440 m
  • Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.
Day 8: Thimphu Sightseeing

Altitude: 2,334 m

  • Visit National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma (51.5 m), Changangkha Lhakhang, Takin Preserve, Sangaygang Viewpoint, and Dupthop Lhakhang.
  • Lunch at Simply Bhutan Museum Restaurant.
  • Afternoon visit to the Painting School (13 Arts & Crafts).
  • Evening witness archery match at Changlimithang Stadium.
  • Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.
Day 9: Thimphu – Punakha Sightseeing – Thimphu

Distance: 76 km | Drive: ~3 hrs | Altitude: 1,242 m

  • Drive to Punakha Valley via Dochula Pass (3,140 m) with 108 stupas.
  • Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility) and Punakha Dzong.
  • Return to Thimphu in the evening.
  • Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.
Day 10: Thimphu – Paro (Departure)
  1. After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for departure.
  2. End of Dagala Trek Bhutan Tour.
