Each year, as the air grows colder and winter sets in, the people of Phobjikha Valley eagerly anticipate a moment held close to their hearts—the arrival of the black-necked cranes. To the local community, these rare and graceful birds are more than winter migrants. They are revered as sacred beings, believed by many to embody the spirits of two guardian deities who watch over the vast glacial valley.
According to local belief, when the cranes arrive and again before they leave, they soar in slow, elegant circles above Gangtey Goempa, completing three rounds around the monastery. This act is said to symbolise reverence for Buddhism’s Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—while offering thanks and seeking blessings during their stay in the valley.
On 11 November each year, the valley comes alive with the Black-Necked Crane Festival, a joyful gathering that unites the entire community. The date also marks the birth anniversary of the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Established in 1998 by the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) in collaboration with the Phobjikha Environment Management Committee (PEMC), the festival reflects both celebration and purpose.
The festival aims to promote awareness of crane conservation while safeguarding the valley’s rich cultural heritage. Traditional dances, folk songs, masked performances, and school presentations transform the courtyard of Gangtey Goempa into a vibrant cultural space—leaving visitors with a deeply moving and lasting impression.

The trek can begin from three different points; however, the most recommended starting point is Sang Choekhor Monastery in Shari. The trail winds through tranquil pine forests and offers breathtaking views of the Paro Valley spread out below.
This trek is especially enchanting, as hikers can enjoy stunning sunsets over the distant hills of Haa. Along the route, trekkers are rewarded with spectacular aerial views of Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang) and the surrounding cliffside chapels. The area is also home to three sacred sky burial sites, believed to have been blessed by Guru Rinpoche, adding spiritual significance to the journey.
While staying at Bumdra, trekkers may choose to hike to one of the sky burial sites, try traditional Bhutanese archery or the Khuru (dart) game, or simply relax and take in the peaceful surroundings.
